Fun with Phonics

This week some children have been learning the ou / ow digraph with Mrs Ntareme. The boys and girls started the week learning the ou phonic song and action before quickly moving onto an ou Read and Reveal activity. The children looked at the letters of each ou word and were prompted to segment it into its component sounds before blending these sounds back together to read the entire word. They played ou Roll and Read which highlighed the ou sound in colour to help decode successfully. The children worked with a partner to read an exciting story full of words that contain the ou digraph. They enjoyed being ou detectives and highlighted each ou word they found. This led to one of our pupil detectives pointing out that there was a word in the story that made the same sound as ou but was spelt differently! WOW!!! Have you guessed it?
This led our learning onto another interactive song ow/ou, where the children had lots of fun sounding out a selection of ou/ow words, voluntarily adding in actions that matched previously learned sounds. Well done everyone!
We sorted for ou/ow, bagged real/nonsense words, played ou/ow pairs, snap and tried to beat the clock at ou/ow Roll and Read. Some children created sentences using new ou/ow words. After all the practice, the speed at which the children could segment and blend the sounds had rapidly increased. We finished up a great week of learning, playing Spin it and Read it, which gave the boys and girls the chance to celebrate success in their reading of the ou / ow words within text. Another stepping stone towards our children enjoying a wide variety of books in the future.
