P1B to the Rescue: Saving Ted from the Rain!

Primary 1B have been busy learning all about waterproof materials during our lesson Ted’s Emergency ☔️

We began by exploring a range of objects and making predictions about whether we thought they were waterproof 👍 or not waterproof 👎. The boys and girls did a fantastic job and predicted the majority correctly!

Next, we read the story Ted’s Emergency and were challenged to problem-solve ways to help Ted stay dry in the rain. The children had some brilliant ideas — Constance suggested a waterproof coat and Hendrix suggested an umbrella. We all decided the best solution was to make Ted an umbrella!

Our next challenge was deciding which material would be best. This is where the real fun began… we carried out an experiment! First, we learned about fair testing and invited some Primary 1B scientists to check that our test was fair. To test the materials, we used gingerbread men, placing them into glasses covered with different materials. If the gingerbread man stayed dry, we knew the material was waterproof.

We tested kitchen roll, tin foil, cling film and card. The boys and girls made predictions and then put them to the test. Unfortunately, two gingerbread men were soggy — what did that mean? It meant those materials were not waterproof! Our results matched our predictions, and we concluded that there were two suitable materials we could use to make Ted’s umbrella.

Problem solved!

Well done, Primary 1B — fantastic teamwork and scientific thinking! 🌟
