St. Comgall’s Rocks!

From 14th-16th October, pupils from P5, 6, and 7 at St. Comgall’s took part in the Island of Ireland Rocks competition — a high-energy, fast-paced times tables challenge open to schools across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. With nearly 300 schools, 17,000 pupils, and 1,200 classes competing, the event was a true celebration of numeracy, speed, and teamwork. St. Comgall’s pupils rose to the challenge with incredible enthusiasm and determination, developing confidence, fluency, and lightning-fast recall of their times tables. We are thrilled to announce that St. Comgall’s finished 2nd among all primary schools in Northern Ireland, answering an astonishing 302,916 questions correctly! Even more impressively, the school placed 4th overall across the entire country, narrowly missing out on 3rd place by just a few thousand answers — a tiny margin considering the scale of the competition. A special shout-out goes to Mr. McLaughlin’s P6C class, who were outstanding throughout the competition. They finished: • 8th overall out of 1,019 classes for total correct answers (98,962), • 11th overall for average score per pupil — a fantastic achievement! Our top three scorers were: • Scarlett Wilkinson – 8,289 points • Anna Vincent – 8,209 points • Merin Jacob – 7,718 points These pupils showed incredible dedication and skill, and we are so proud of their efforts! Numeracy Coordinator Mr. McLaughlin shared his thoughts: “This competition really highlights the power of teamwork, enthusiasm, and the encouragement pupils give each other. It’s amazing what can be achieved when friends cheer each other on! I’d love to see every pupil doing their 5 minutes of Times Tables Rock Stars each day — it really makes a difference.” St. Comgall’s is incredibly proud of all the pupils who took part. Their hard work and positive attitude made this a memorable and successful event. We’re already looking forward to next year’s competition — let’s keep rocking those times tables!
