World Book Day

WORLD BOOK DAY in our school was an exciting and enriching experience for everyone. The full week was packed with activities that engaged our children across all year groups. Classes participated in many activities, ranging from table quizzes, learning about the lives of different authors, writing book reviews, ‘Hot Seating’ and shared reading. The P7 boys and girls visited the P1 children in their classroom and read stories to them individually, this was enjoyed by all the children in both year groups. P2, P3 and P4 met an Irish author and illustrator Paddy Donnelly on a zoom session, he read one of his new books and got the children involved in a drawing activity. They thoroughly enjoyed the activity and felt like they were real illustrators themselves. He also talked a lot about his life and his job, the children listened carefully and enjoyed learning about his exciting career. P5 and P6 children took part in an online quiz with hundreds of other schools. P5B boys and girls used Adobe Express AI to create new book titles and book covers, inspired by their class novel- ‘James and the Giant Peach.’ They created book titles, using their own names with other fruits and vegetables, and as an extra focus on literacy they used alliteration. Miss Conlon and her P2 class performed a wonderful assembly all about World Book Day! During the week, all classes took part in ‘Guess the Book’ activity. The children brought in some fabulous, interesting props, we had a huge variety from bars of chocolate, cuddly toys to handmade diaries! The children all looked forward to showing their prop, talking about it and they asked and answered super questions about the story, character, setting, plot, author etc. All children have begun their reading challenge (ReadOn) which involves reading for a longer period each night and gathering sponsor money for the charity Cancer Fund for Children. P3-P7 children listened to a presentation from Rebecca, one of the organisers from the charity. She explained what we can do and told us how the money we collect can be used. Overall, it was a fun week that highlighted the joy of reading! Well done to everyone!
